Modtops are modern additions, penthouse-like, that have been constructed on top of older buildings. Developers and architects responsible for these stacked edifices either strive to shock through a contrast in design, or attempt to “match” the host building in shape and color. With few exceptions, modtops are tragic failures in city planning and compromise architectural integrity. And besides, the visual impression they create is cockeyed. One eye travels upward, while the other follows the length of the block, leaving the brain behind.
