Buried Cast Iron

Here lies the truth behind the facade. This photo was taken a few years ago in Tribeca, while a renovation was in progress at 46 Warren Street. There is sometime both strange and sinister at play here, a cast iron column encased in cinder block, faced in marble. Makes you wonder what else exists behind the thousands of updated facades scattered throughout the city.  Also, for the benefit of constructing a large modtop, this entire edifice became post modern in style.

To make matters even more curious, there is a building across the street of similar design and color, still in its original state, a comparison that shows the difference between a facelift and a preservation. For the sake of uniformity, all character is lost.
